Who says videos aren’t educational? Before I watched Concrete Secrets, I thought “Fresno” was a city one drove through as fast as possible, “slump” referred either to my posture or my portfolio, and “bull float” was….well, I guess what you hoped would happen when you threw a bull into water. Oh, me of little knowledge; now I’m intimately aware that these terms-along with “rodding,” “tamping,” and “brooming” are used in a form of “do-it-yourself” work that I hope to personally never encounter in my snug, secure library life: pouring concrete. Presenting everything reasonably savvy viewers need to know to create their own driveways, sidewalks, and walkways, this instructional video, hosted by knowledgeable James Belville can potentially save homeowners a bundle of money. Recommended for the experienced handyman (or woman) who already has a reasonably firm grasp of how to transfer square feet into yards, understands that dire things happen to concrete if one does not move quickly, and is aware that “Fresno” is more than just the Raisin Capital of California.

“Having little or no knowlage of how concrete was finished, I decided to order Concrete Secrets to see I could pour my own patio. There are books on the subject, but the books just didn’t quite illustrate concrete finishing enough for me to feel confindent in doing it my self. After reviewing the video I called James Belville the producer of Concrete Secrets and asked him if he thought I could do it with help from my brother and one of my friends. He said “as long as the job was not to large, and you have enough help to get it placed in the forms, you will do fine, just fallow the instructions in the video. We poured the patio and fallowed the instructions in detail, two of my friends wheel barrowed the concrete my brother shoveled it in place, and I rodded it off. My brother tamped while I bull floated the patio. The work was a little harder then I thought and took a little longer then I expected, and using the fresno took a little getting use too. Repeating edging, jointing and fresno after 5 hours we broomed it.
I recommend Concrete Secrets to anyone who is thinking of doing there own concrete work, remember this type of work is physical. “

Author James Belville is on the right track in this video. For the first time finisher, the tips covered are essential to finishing concrete. As a profesional finisher, I find that the biggest problems the do it yourselfers make are covered in this video. James also talks about “walking tools,” which people in other states may not be aware of. These tools help a home owner do a better job while also saving his back. This video is a good start on the art of finishing concrete, but gives a person a good idea on the basics of the final finish.

Excellent: Excellent video for a first timer. Can’t wait to get out and pour some mud.
Excellent: Highly recommended.
Excellent: Clear straight forward and easy to understand made the basic steps clear and often so you come away feeling you can do this.
Very Good: Well made, hope they make a video with focus on site prep, forming, rebar, to the finished product.
ABOUT CONCRETE
Concrete Stain reacts with the minerals in concrete chemically, to form a permanent color that is durable, chip resistant and does not flake. Stained concrete colors can be mixed to create a multitude of color shades and intensity with new or old concrete surfaces. Acid stain is applied by brushing, rolling or sprayed onto the surface. Colors available, but not limited too are, violet, black, lime, browns, off white, terra cotta, blue, tan, sea blue, green and rust. To prep the project prior to staining concrete, the surface is sanded to remove any impurities and should be free of grease, oil, dust, paint and other materials. New concrete should be at least 28 day old before staining, After achieving the desired look and color, the stain is allowed to dry then neutralized, prior to sealing or waxing.
Stamped concrete driveway pouring is usually placed with minimal difficulty by backing the Ready-mix truck from the street to the desired location to start placement in the stamped concrete driveway. A 3000 lb psi. concrete mix at a 5.50 depth is recommended with 3/8″ or 1/2″ steel rebar tied on 4 ft. centers to assure a strong slab. After forming the concrete driveway the sub grade is compacted using a mechanical device, Jumping Jack, Plate compactor or roller, if not compacted prior to forming. Concrete slabs are only as strong as the ground that is poured on, using steel in conjunction with compacting will greatly enhance the strength and life of the stamped concrete driveway. Concrete driveway can be stamped concrete, stained concrete, regular gray, exposed aggregate or textured. Once the stamped concrete driveway is finished, a curing compound is applied to seal the slab for superior moisture retention, producing a harder concrete driveway.
Concrete Patio installation is usually placed using wheel borrows or a concrete pump, the added cost is slightly higher then a driveway. Concrete patio installation practices, compaction, steel reinforcement and curing of the concrete patio apply. In Arizona, concrete patios, garage, entry ways and floors need to be termite protected using a licenced contractor within 24hrs of the concrete being poured. Concrete patios can be stamped concrete, stained concrete, regular gray, exposed aggregate or a textured concrete slab construction.
Epoxy Coatings, garage floor, concrete driveway or concrete patio is a new trend coming more and more popular as the prices of such coatings have been reduced due to its durability, not having the cost of removing all of the concrete. With the new styles of patterns and colors, almost any look can be achieved closely matching existing colors of your home or business. We only use the highest quality products available to ensure a great look and durability.
